HKND in Talks with Unions Over the Grand Canal

Last Friday, December 5, HKND Group met with leaders of various labor unions of Nicaragua discussing the economic progress and job opportunities that the Grand Canal Project will generate for the country.

During the meeting, which was held at the the Secretariat of the Presidency, both sides agreed that the Grand Inter-oceanic Canal of Nicaragua will create more employment opportunities for Nicaraguans, at least 50,000 direct jobs in the five years of construction.

The union representatives declared their full support to the Grand Canal of Nicaragua, announcing expectation that HKND Group will propose in advance the employment needs according to the Project process, to facilitate the timely training, education and certification of the unions, so that they can keep pace with the progress of the Project.

The meeting was attended by the 16 representatives from unions of various sectors such as education, construction and health.

Work on the $50 billion worth Grand Canal that will link the Atlantic and the Pacific is set to begin on December 22nd. According to the HKND, the future canal would pass through Lake Nicaragua, Central America’s largest lake, and will be between 230 meters and 520 meters wide and 27.6 meters deep.
