Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) yesterday officially praised Massachusetts Senators Edward J. Markey and Elizabeth Warren, and Congressmen Stephen F. Lynch and Michael Capuano for the hard work they put into securing that the $310 million Boston Harbor Federal Deep Draft Navigation Improvement Project was included in the federal Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA).

The reception was organized on Monday at the Boston Fish Pier where the Washington delegation was recognized for their cooperation and success.

Funding for the $310 million Boston Harbor dredging project will come from WRRDA, legislation that will authorize the dredging project and other water projects throughout the country.

According to Massport, dredging Boston Harbor will help double the number of containers on ships coming into Boston. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects that for every dollar spent on construction, there will be nearly nine dollars returned in increased economic activity – resulting in a $2.7 billion economic benefit for the entire New England region.

The Corps estimates that the Boston Harbor project should be completed in 2017.
