All vessels belonging to the Consortium consisting of Great Lakes (25%) and Dredging International NV (75%) that will take part in the widening and deepening of the Suez Canal have arrived on the scene and are ready for action.
The $540 million contract, awarded to the Consortium earlier in October, involves the widening and dredging to -79 feet of the western branch of the Suez Canal at Great Bitter Lake, Deversoir Reach and Kabret Reach, which is a 25 kilometer stretch of the canal.
Dredging International has mobilized four cutter suction dredges and two hopper dredges along with numerous auxiliary equipment while Great Lakes has its Middle East-based heavy duty, high production cutter suction dredges, the ‘Carolina’ and the ‘Ohio’ on the scene.
The Consortium’s scope of work is expected to be completed by the end of the third quarter of 2015.
Some of the world’s top dredging companies are taking part in the New Suez Canal project that is designed to enlarge the transit capacity and to increase industrial activity in the area. Included in the project are Boskalis, Van Oord, National Marine Dredging Company (NMDC), Jan de Nul, Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (GLDD) and Dredging International NV.
