MODEC has confirmed that a Floating Wind & Current Hybrid Power Generation System (SKWID) constructed by MODEC sank into the water sometime before daylight today while being installed.

The identified location is 1.2km off the coast of Kabe Island, Karatsu-City, Saga Prefecture.

The sunken SKWID uses lubricating oils, however, MODEC has received confirmation that there is no spill or environmental contamination and that no one was injured due to this incident.

“Final details about the incident are not yet known, but every possible action is being taken into consideration to safeguard the environment by our Field Response Team,” the company stated.

Once weather conditions improve in this area, MODEC will start salvaging the SKWID.
