The University of Gothenburg has invested in a new research vessel that will further improve the capacity for education and research.

Recently, the University held a coin ceremony for its new vessel, also named Skagerak, just like the current vessel and the research vessel that came before it.

The vessel is being built at Nauta Ship Repair Yard in Gdansk, Poland.

The new research vessel will cost just over SEK 100 million, and is expected to be completed in autumn 2015 and will be inaugurated in Gothenburg by the king.

The new vessel will be 45 metres long and will weigh about 800 tonnes. It will have a crew of five in addition to about 20 researchers and students. The new vessel is larger than the old research vessel Skagerak, yet will consume 40 per cent less fuel. The old Skagerak, will be retired after 40 years in service.
