HKND Group and the Ramsar Convention (Convention on Wetlands of International Importance ) recently held two meetings about the protection and preservation of the San Miguelito wetland area.

The Ramsar Convention was signed in 1971 in the city of Ramsar, Iran, and entered into force on December 21, 1975. As of February 2, 2010, 159 state members worldwide had joined the convention protecting 1,886 important wetlands, with a total area of 185 million hectares.

Nicaragua is a member of the Ramsar Convention, with nine wetlands listed in the organization’s protection plan. The planning Nicaraguan Canal route will cross the south edge of San Miguelito wetland, Rio San Juan Department.

The meeting, organized by the Nicaraguan Government, paid special attention to the Ramsar mission. At the meeting, HKND made a presentation on the measures to be taken during the construction and operation of the Grand Canal of Nicaragua in order to protect the wetlands.

HKND’s Construction Management Department delivered information and results of detailed studies on the comprehensive planning of the Canal, the use and protection of water resources, the design for three-level locks to maintain the level and prevent salinization of Lake Nicaragua, among other issues.

The official construction of the Nicaragua Canal is set to begin this year.
