Financial problems that construction companies in Brazil face could have a critical effect on a planned LNG terminal in Uruguay.
GNLS a joint project by GFD Suez of France and Marubeni of Japan is setting up a 10 million cubic metres per day FLNG unit off Montevideo for Gas Sayago, a joint venture by two Uruguayan state-owned companies, Ancap and UTE.
The construction of the terminal was awarded to Brasilian company, OAS. The construction was scheduled for completion by the third quarter of 2015, but OAS’ alleged involvement in a corruption scheme could see the project delayed to 2016.
As GDF Suez told Argus, already there is a few months delay on the project and it is not possible to exactly assess the completion date. The company said that in case of OAS’ bankruptcy it will have to look at other contractors.
Gas Sayago, that awarded a further contract to OAS to build a natural gas pipeline from the terminal to shore and Uruguayan gas grid totalling 15 km, said that the installation of the GDF Suez Neptune as the regasification vessel remains scheduled for third quarter.
