GE and Andritz Hydro consortium is the preferred bidder for supplying Swansea tidal lagoon with 16 turbines with the combined capacity of 320 MW.

Flow is created by gravity through the difference in tidal height between the inside and outside of the lagoon walls.

The high power output of 320 MW produced by only 16 turbines is achieved due to the efficiency of electricity generation in both directions of the flow.

This is accomplished by the deployment of induction generators with variable drive systems and axial flow low-head bulb hydro-turbines.

The fewer number of turbines necessary to reach the set power capacity decreases the capital and operational expenditures.

GE is concerned with power generation and its transmission to the shore. The company will supply induction generators and Variable Speed Drives (VSD) based on its medium voltage drive technology and turbine technology supplied by Andritz Hydro.

The plant is designed to last with operating life expectancy of 120 years.

The Swansea Bay tidal lagoon is expected to provide electricity for over 155.000 homes.
