Blue Motion Energy has developed a marine turbine that uses the combination of wave, tidal and wind energy, resulting in higher power outputs.

The technology is more economically viable than energy production using only wind or tides or waves. A scaled turbine is tested at the hydraulic research laboratory under offshore conditions at Delft, the Netherlands.

The calculation model, required for the proof of concept, has been validated – and now the larger turbines of up to 25 MW capacity can be dimensioned.

The Blue motion technology uses an efficient vertical axis cross-flow rotor, which is surrounded by concrete sea walls.

Within the system uses venturi effect – the reduction in fluid pressure that results when a fluid flows through a constricted section of pipe.

An increase in the produced power is achieved by the venturi effect. Above the waterline, the rotor produces energy from the wind. Therefore the rotor can be extended high above the waterline. The concrete construction is gravity based.

During operation, the turbine produces oxygen, adding it to the water, which results in the improvement of the water quality and ecosystem.

The next step is the development of the prototype. A basic design is made for a scaled 0.8 MW turbine to demonstrate the technology.
