The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District will host a virtual information session for people interested in rehabilitation efforts at the Herbert Hoover Dike surrounding Lake Okeechobee in south Florida.

The information session will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Thursday, February 26. Interested individuals can listen to audio of the presentation via teleconference, while visual aids will be available at a website.

The goal of the session is to provide updated information on continuing rehabilitation work at the dike and information on a proposal to extend embankment repairs to the west of Belle Glade in Palm Beach County during fiscal year 2017.

Herbert Hoover Dike (HHD) is a 143-mile earthen dam that surrounds Lake Okeechobee, the heart of the Kissimmee-Okeechobee-Everglades system. The original dike was constructed with gravel, rock, limestone, sand, and shell. The project reduces impacts from flooding as a result of high lake levels for a large area of south Florida.
