Last Thursday, after a year and half of construction, Dutch – Danish consortium Ballast Nedam – Rohde Nielsen completed reinforcement project along the Dutch coast in Katwijk.

The Netherlands is situated largely below sea level. Protection against water is therefore important. Part of Katwijk’s coast didn’t meet the latest safety standards so the coast was therefore reinforced with a dyke in new, wider dunes.

In close consultation with residents a landscape design was made, transforming the city’s seaside in an attractive resort. The new coastal defense scheme protects Katwijk with a unique dike-in-dune construction and an underground car park built between the dike and the boulevard.

The Katwijk Coastal work is part of a national 780 million euro program to reinforce the Dutch coast at ten locations. In 2003 coastal authorities concluded that the current sea defenses at these locations were unable to withstand a super storm.
