PortMiami’s Deep Dredge project, that will deepen the Port’s existing channel from its current 42-foot depth to minus 50-52’, will be completed this summer.

This was announced yesterday by the Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez during the annual State of the County Address at Florida International University’s west Miami-Dade campus.

Mayor Carlos Gimenez said that the Deep Dredge project at PortMiami is expected to wrap up this summer. “ Once completed, our port will be one of only four U.S. Atlantic ports to be ‘Big Ship Ready’ and able to berth deep draft megaships capable of accessing the expanded Panama Canal, which is expected to be completed sometime in 2016. ”

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company (GLDD), the contractor selected for the project, began dredging operations at the end of November 2013. The $220 million worth project will result in the removal of approximately 2.1 million cubic yards of dredged material.

The Deep Dredge is one of the most important projects in the Port’s history. The deepening of Miami’s channel will create over 30,000 new jobs and increase cargo throughput, allowing the port to accommodate new, larger Post-Panamax vessels.
