BioPower System has completed the construction of its bioWave wave energy device that is scheduled for ocean deployment in 2015.
The steel structures that make up the bioWAVE 250 kW pilot unit have been fabricated and are currently undergoing machining, painting, and assembly, according to the company.
The complete bioWAVE, with integrated O-Drive, which is a self-contained and detachable system capable of converting irregular hydraulic power into on-grid electricity, will undergo onshore tests and commissioning in the coming months, prior to transporting to the ocean site near Port Fairy, Australia, for deployment.
The bioWAVE is designed to operate in ocean swell waves, absorbing energy both at the surface and below. It is a bottom-mounted pitching device, which spans the full depth.
The bioWAVE prototype currently under development will operate at a depth of 30 m, while the planned 1 MW commercial model will operate where the depth is 40-45 m.
BioPower Systems is Sydney-based renewable energy technology company concerned with developing systems for both wave and tidal power conversion.
