Eurostat has published statistics report on the share of renewables in gross final consumption in the European Union.

In 2013, the share of energy produced from renewable sources reached 15 percent in EU, compared to 2004, the first year for which the data on the share of energy from renewables is available, when the renewables share amounted to 8.3 percent.

The share of renewables in gross final consumption of energy is one of the indicators of the progress of Europe 2020 strategy, under which the EU set a goal to increase the share of renewables to 20 percent by the year 2020.

Each EU Member State has its own Europe 2020 target, with three of the states having already achieved that target – Sweden with 52.1 percent of energy produced from renewables, Estonia with 25.6 percent and Bulgaria with 19 percent.
