Teekay informed it held a keel-laying ceremony on March 4 for the first of its nine LNG newbuilds that will feature the ME-GI technology at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s shipyard in South Korea.
The vessel is expected to be delivered in 2016 on a contract charter with Cheniere.
In December 2012 Teekay placed an order for two 173,400 cbm LNG carrier newbuilds with the South Korean shipbuilder DSME with an option for another three vessels. Together with four LNG carriers of approximately the same capacity on order at the Chinese shipbuilder Hudong Zhonghua, the Creole Spirit, as the company said, will be the first to feature the ME-GI technology.
The vessels built by Hudong Zhonghua will be used to transport liquefied natural gas from the QCLNG project near Gladstone as a part of the 20-year agreement with BG Group and CNOOC for the supply of 3,6 million tons per year.
According to Teekay LNG, the scaffolding is installed temporarily for the assembly of the cargo containment system, comprising around 60,000 insulation blocks per ship.
All vessels on order are scheduled for delivery from 2016 through to 2019.
