The high-voltage substation for the Eneco Luchterduinen offshore wind project has recently been installed in the Dutch North Sea. The substation was designed and built by Belgian firms Iemants, CG and Cofely Fabricon.

Protective coatings from AkzoNobel’s International brand were used to protect the substation from the tough and corrosive environment of the North Sea. The Eneco Luchterduinen wind farm will have a final capacity of 129MW, supplied from 43 wind turbines, which will deliver enough energy to power over 150,000 homes.

International coatings used on the Eneco Luchterduinen offshore wind project included Interzone 954 for the submerged areas; with some areas topcoated with Interthane 990 to deliver additional color durability. The atmospheric areas utilized a tried and tested three coat system, also from the International range, of Interzinc 52, Intergard 475HS and Interthane 990. Interzone 954 and Interthane 990 were also utilized on the wind turbine foundations at the wind farm.

AkzoNobel have a long history in the offshore wind market and have been involved in projects including the world’s largest offshore wind farm, London Array, and others including Borkum Riffgrund and Anholt.

AkzoNobel’s Interpon powder coatings are also used on onshore wind turbines, offering advanced corrosion protection and electrical insulation for internal components. In addition, adhesives from AkzoNobel’s wood coatings are used inside wind turbine blades to bond layers of balsa wood, giving them the strength and durability needed for the harsh conditions they are subjected to.
