In order to keep the deep water of the Mongla Port navigable, Bangladesh government is about to procure a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger with the financial support of China.
According to Hawlader Zakir Hossain, a director of the Mongla Port Authority, the Ministry of Shipping (MoS) has requested the Economic Relations Division (ERD) to mobilize necessary funds for the purchase of hopper dredger.
“ We have had cutter suction dredgers, but this time we need hopper dredger. We are trying to mobilize funds from external sources. Then the proposed dredger would be purchased for a big boost for the Mongla Port operations, ” said Mr Hossain to a local news site.
To conduct maintenance dredging of its waterways, MPA has already procured two cutter suction dredgers, with the arrival of second one being set for April 2015.
Procurement of this hopper dredger, the third for MPA, will allow continuous maintenance of the Pashur Channel.
