During their April 6th meeting at City Hall, the North Myrtle Beach City Council will consider second (final) reading an ordinance to establish a special assessment district regarding the proposed Cherry Grove dredging project.

The proposed ordinance officially creates the Cherry Grove Improvement District (District), approves the “assessment roll” or listing of properties in the District and the dollar amount of the assessment imposed on each property, and it provides for sending notice to owners of properties in the District which will advise them of a time and place they may be heard to contest assessments.

The proposed ordinance also provides for publication of a notice of the assessment and for publication of the ordinance in the newspaper.

It also approves the MuniCap documents relating to the imposition and allocation of the assessments.

The canals in Cherry Grove are manmade and have not been dredged since they were created in the Fifties. Many of them are no longer navigable at low tide. The canals approved for dredging by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are generally located within the area from 42nd Avenue North to 63rd Avenue North.

The first cost estimates show that it will take approx $13 million to complete the project, including the initial dredge, a maintenance dredge, and other work.
