Marine South East (MSE) and Sustainable Marine Energy (SME) have concluded the project whose aim is to reduce high costs of anchoring for marine energy devices.
The aim of the SAMED project was to validate anchoring technology using helical screw piles.
The technology should be usable for seabed anchoring to replace gravity anchors and impact piling of foundations, according to MSE.
MSE identified the sub-sea installation rig as a critical part of the system, as this would determine speed of installation, pile size restrictions and load capacity, and size of the support vessel required.
The SAMED project was developed to prototype an installation rig in order to create proof of concept for the technology. It was used to secure SME’s PLAT-O tidal energy platform, MSE’s press release reads.
SME undertook the engineering and marine operations aspects of the project whilst MSE conducted market assessment and commercialization planning.
The companies are now exploring options to move from the proof of concept stage to full commercial demonstration.
