The potential generating capacity of Newport tidal lagoon could be between 1.8 GW and 2.8 GW, the same as the proposed Cardiff tidal lagoon.
According to the Planning Inspectorate, Newport tidal lagoon would comprise a seawall attached to the foreshore, at its western extent, approximately 1 km to the mouth of the River Usk.
The eastern wall would extend to the foreshore in the area of Baldwin Sands.
The furthest offshore extent is set up to 8 km from the foreshore towards the centre of the Severn Estuary.
The application for the lagoon is expected to be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate 2017 – 2018.
After receipt of the application, there will be 28 days to review the application and to make a decision on whether or not to accept it.
Tidal Lagoon Power is the developer behind the Newport tidal lagoon. The company is also developing Swansea Bay , and Cardiff Bay tidal lagoon projects, and is conducting early feasibility and engagement work relating to the delivery of three other full-scale UK tidal lagoons at West Cumbria, Colwyn Bay and Bridgwater Bay.
