OpenHydro to deploy two 2 MW turbines in fall

OpenHydro is planning to deploy two 2 MW tidal turbines in the Bay of Fundy, Canada in Q3 2015. OpenHydro is planning to deploy two 2 MW tidal turbines in the Bay of Fundy, Canada in Q3 2015.

Through a joint venture, Cape Sharp Tidal, formed by Emera and OpenHydro , the company aims to deploy 4 MW grid connected tidal array that could power an estimated 1.000 homes in Nova Scotia, Canada.

According to The Chronicle Herald, a Canadian news publisher, Cape Sharp Tidal is planning to lay cables at Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE ) test site in summer.

The barge that will be used for the installation of the turbines is currently under construction in Nova Scotia.

“All components are either under construction or in the final phase of procurement. We’re looking at Q3, so it’s more around fall than the summer,” Jeremy Poste , country manager of OpenHydro Technology Canada, was quoted as saying by The Chronicle Herald.

Cape Sharp Tidal was one of the four tidal energy developers that received approval for developmental feed-in tariff granted by the Government of Canada.

The approval allows the developers to enter into a 15-year power purchase agreement with Nova Scotia Power.

The project will move forward in phases, subject to required approvals, with the ultimate goal of developing up to a 300 MW commercial tidal array that could deliver energy to 75.000 customers.
