Spanish Association of Natural gas for Mobility (GASNAM) held a conference on the use of LNG as marine fuel.
GASNAM president José Ramón Freire emphasized the advantages of LNG as marine fuel in the maritime sector and the economic potential it offers to Spain.
According to the GASNAM statement, the conference highlighted the importance of training the crews that work on vessels powered by LNG, of the construction of LNG-powered towing vessels and ship-to-ship bunker barge, as well as the developments in the business sector in Spanish ports.
Currently 50% of total European terminal capacity comes from Spain’s LNG terminals.
A technical study was also presented by GASNAM’s Maritime VP, José Poblet, on options enabling ship owners to comply with the new ECA rules. It described LNG as the best option, especially for newbuilds. In Spain there are currently five vessels being equipped with LNG engines while some retrofits are under study.
The conference stressed that Spain is a competitive position for bunkering services as well as for the construction of LNG-powered vessels and future conversions.
