Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company of Oak Brook, Illinois is continuing the south end beach replenishment project in Ocean City (NJ) that will deliver approximately 1.6 million cubic yards of sand on 2.6 miles of beach from 36th to 59th Street.

Neighboring communities, Strathmere and Sea Isle, will also be receiving beach replenishment projects simultaneous with the work in Ocean City.

Working on the project is GLDD’s hopper dredge “Liberty Island” which began dredging operations April 16, 2015.

The sand is being gathered from a borrow site located approx 2.5 miles offshore of Strathmere. The dredge then takes the sand close to shore at one of two landing areas where it is being pumped onto the beach. The first landing area is near 43rd Street and the second landing area is near 55th Street.

The current project schedule calls for dredging operations to be completed in early July, with equipment demobilization to follow. The project is being overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is 100 % federally funded at a total cost of $ 57 million.
