The construction of tidal turbines for Paimpol-Bréhat project, developed by EDF, has started, and the turbines are expected to be grid-connected before the end of 2015.

The Paimpol-Bréhat demonstration project is located in France, off the coast of Paimpol.

DCNS, through its subsidiary OpenHydro, is working with EDF to install two 16 metre in diameter turbines. Each turbine will produce 500 kW of electricity.

The experimental tidal array will allow DCNS to validate the operation of two turbines connected to the power grid.

According to DCNS, the production of the blades for the turbines has begun in the DCNS’ facility in Lorient, in April.

In May, the assembly process for the stators will take place in DCNS’ facility located in Brest.

The assembly of the turbines’ rotors will be conducted at DCNS’ site in Cherbourg in June, followed by the final turbines assembly scheduled for summer at DCNS’ site in Brest.

This project is expected to pave the way for the deployment of pre-commercial tidal farms and the development of a tidal energy industrial sector in France.

OpenHydro is a DCNS company specialising in the design, manufacture and installation of marine turbines generating renewable energy from tidal streams.

DCNS Group is a French-based company focused on inventing high-technology solutions to sustainably secure the sea and develop its potential.

EDF is a European electricity utility that supplies energy and services to more than 38 million customers.
