Koninklijke Smals, a Dutch company involved in hydraulic and civil-engineering works, has released a video about their dredging and remediation project in Port of Husum, one of Germany’s seaports along the North Sea coast.

Husum is famous for its tourism, HDR Shipyard and Senvion, one of Europe’s leading wind turbine manufacturers.

Along the shipyard, the bottom was polluted with tributyltin (TBT), used as a biocide in anti-fouling paint, commonly known as bottom paint, which was applied to the hulls of ocean going vessels.

All dredged material had to be pumped and stored into Geotextile Dewatering Containers (GTC).

The Husumer Locks protect the inner city from flooding during spring tides and extreme weather conditions. During the dredging operations, the locks were closed to create a fixed water level in the port.

All dredging operations were controlled by a survey vessel, equipped with a dual frequency echo sounder.
