TÜV NORD has received an order from Dong Energy to monitor commissioning of the offshore wind farm Borkum Riffgrund 1.

Experts will test the function of the wind turbines on site – in particular their safety systems. TÜV NORD will also issue the project certificate at the end of the commissioning process – which is the prerequisite for regular operation.

The BSH (Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency) specifies that offshore wind farms have to be monitored by an independent certifier during commissioning.

From the end of April, two TÜV NORD experts are supporting the team from Dong Energy at sea and will be on the job for around three to four weeks. The focus is on the safety systems of all 78 wind turbines. These ensure, for example, that the pitch systems of the rotor blades turn reliably and safely out of the wind at extreme wind speeds in order to protect the turbine and the environment against damage.

As soon as commissioning is complete and the certificates of conformity are present for all the build phases of the wind farm, TÜV NORD will subject all the documents to a last review.

Following completion of this review, the final project certificate will be issued for Borkum Riffgrund 1, which can then be used to apply for final operational release from BSH.
