Cowes Harbour Commission Chairman Roger Mathias, together with the Commissioners, will be present at the Annual Public Meeting on May 21st where the Harbour Master Capt. Stuart McIntosh will give a short presentation on CHC’s Annual Report for 2014-2015 and the Breakwater Project.

The Harbour Master will focus on presenting a full update on the Cowes Breakwater Project and its long-term objectives, the construction program and navigational information for the final phase of works this year, as well as an update on the tidal regime.

Following a successful winter settlement period of the breakwater’s gravel core, Boskalis Westminster returned this spring to the site to carry out the final phase of this 18-month project.

In June, the contractor will mobilize to commence reshaping of the Breakwater’s gravel core, bringing sections into profile before applying layers of smaller rock of up to 60kg that act as a filter to prevent the gravel migrating out of the core structure. Following this, a rock armor layer consisting of 300-1000kg rocks will be installed to provide long-term weather and wave protection.

Finally, permanent navigation aids, fixed beacons and buoys will be put in place before a monitoring and handover period in autumn 2015.

2015 is set to be a pivotal year in the development of Cowes Harbour. Completion of the new Cowes Breakwater will realise the Commission’s long-term goal of transforming Cowes into a true sheltered harbour, supporting jobs and businesses and creating a catalyst for further investment, as is already being seen with the proposed new marina and Solent Gateways development projects in East Cowes.
