The US$34 billion Ichthys LNG project in Australia, operated by Inpex , has recently lifted the roof of its second cryogenic storage tank at Bladin Point near Darwin.
The 90 metre span, 1100 tonne steel structure was constructed on the tank floor and then raised using two powerful fans, Inpex said in a project update.
Inpex General Manager Construction Vince Kenny said lifting the roof to its final height of around 32 metres took just over five hours to complete and required only 0.3 PSI of air pressure.
The giant LNG project will use the same process to raise the roofs of two remaining cryogenic tanks at Bladin Point, including one propane tank and one butane tank.
More than 80 people were involved in the lift, including a team of 30 welders who ascended the tank to fix the roof to the outer walls, Inpex said.
Each of the project’s two LNG storage tanks will have a volume of 165,000 cubic metres and will stand 46 metres high and span 91 metres.
