Japan’s imports of liquefied natural gas dropped 8.5 percent in April, as compared to the same month a year ago, preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance reveals.
The world’s largest buyer of the chilled gas imported 6.60 million tonnes of LNG in April.
Japan paid 419,142 million yen for LNG imports in April, down 35 percent when compared to the same month in 2014, according to the data.
The country’s ten independent regional electric power companies bought 4.32 million mt of LNG in April, down 7.5 percent from April last year.
Total electricity generated and purchased across the ten companies in April declined by 1.6 percent from a year earlier to 66.68 billion kWh, due principally to decreased heating demands caused by relatively higher temperatures in April than the previous year, Japan’s FEPC said.
