Trailing suction hopper dredge (TSHD) FREEWAY returned to the Clacton-on-Sea in late May to recommence beach recharge,completing the last section of the haul road.
The vessel, owned by Boskalis Westminster NV, will stay on the site for approx 6 days to establish a haul road along the beach, enabling construction vehicle access to be gained along the frontage between Hazlemere Road and Cliff Road.
According to the Tendring District Council, the total number of trips completed up to date is over 45 with some 100,000m³ of beach recharge material pumped ashore.
The Clacton to Holland-on-Sea Coast Protection scheme, worth around £36 million and covering 5kms from Clacton Pier to Holland Haven, was signed off by the Environment Agency (EA) on the 10 September 2013.
The works are being undertaken in two phases; with the first phase from Holland Haven to Cliff Road, Holland on Sea already completed and the second phase currently underway from Cliff Road to Clacton Pier.
The scheme, to be completed by late autumn 2015, will protect more than 3,000 homes and businesses for the next 100 years.
