Mitsui Ocean Development & Engineering Company (MODEC) has salvaged its floating wind and current hybrid generation system ‘SKWID’ that sank off Japan late in 2014.
The SKWID unit sank during the installation process 1.2 km off the coast of Kabe Island, Japan, on December 18, 2014.
MODEC confirmed to Tidal Energy Today that the unit has been successfully salvaged on May 23, 2015.
No spill or environmental contamination in the waters occurred, and no one was injured, according to MODEC.
SKWID is a floating wind and current hybrid power generation system capable of harvesting the renewable energy from currents and ocean winds, and converting them into power.
SKWID was developed by Mitsui Ocean Development & Engineering Company (MODEC), an offshore technology company specializing in floating oil and gas production systems from Japan.
