Reuters: BP to shut Chirag platform

British oil company BP will shut down one of its Caspian Sea oil production platforms, Reuters has reported. British oil company BP will shut down one of its Caspian Sea oil production platforms, Reuters has reported.

According to the news agency, the Chirag platform, located offshore Azerbaijan will be closed down for maintenance. The news was shared by the oil giant’s Regional President for Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, Gordon Birrell who said that the platform would be closed within two months.

Chirag is an offshore production, drilling and quarters (PDQ) platform located 120km east of Baku in the Caspian Sea, at a water depth of 120 metres. The platform has been in operation since 1997 producing the so-called Early Oil from the Azeri Chirag Gunashli field. Total Chirag production was 54,000 b/d in the first quarter of 2015.
