Boss of the Australian LNG player Woodside said on Wednesday that natural gas must not be considered as a transition fuel anymore.
“ Natural gas needs to be a part of the base energy mix … we need to stop talking about gas as just something that will pass by in the nigh t,” Peter Coleman, CEO of Woodside told the audience at the sidelines of the World Gas Conference.
“ Governments need to provide gas and to deal with air pollution today. This is not simply a carbon issue, and an issue of global warming, ” Coleman said. “ Gas sector needs to step up, argue its benefits. Who allowed clean coal to be coined? Give me a break. ”
Talking about the future gas and LNG demand, Coleman said there is a huge demand coming up from Asia, especially from India and China.
According to Woodside’s boss, India only takes about 13 million tonnes of LNG per year, while Japan imports over 90 million tonnes.
“ India has a population of about 1,2 billion people and Japan just over 127 million people.. there is a huge opportunity just there, ” Coleman added.
