Hawboldt Industries has secured a deal with Cape Sharp Tidal to supply equipment that will be used for turbine deployment in the Bay of Fundy.

Hawbolt Industries has been awarded $4.7 mln contract for the design and manufacturing of three heavy lift winches that will be used on the OpenHydro deployment and recovery barge, Emera’s press release reads.

Cape Sharp Tidal, a joint venture between Emera and OpenHydro, plans to deploy and grid-connect two 2 MW tidal turbines off Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, in fall 2015.

James Ives , OpenHydro Chief Executive, said: “We’re pleased to award another contract to a Nova Scotia company after a competitive tender. We’re developing local expertise here, which will be crucial as we move into larger projects and lay the foundations of a tidal industry.”

OpenHydro used winch technology for the installation of the turbine in the Bay of Fundy in 2009, as well as in subsequent turbine deployments throughout Europe, according to Emera.

Hawboldt Industries General Manager John Huxtable said: “This is an important opportunity for our business. Cape Sharp Tidal is a major project for our region and we’re happy our local expertise will be right there on the water as part of it.”

Late in May, Cape Sharp Tidal awarded two multi-million contracts to Aecon Group and Lengkeek Vessel Engineering.

Aecon will fabricate turbine components and manufacture the barge at its facilities, and Lengkeek earned the contract for barge design.

Hawboldt Industries is a Chester-based company that designs and manufactures marine equipment.
