Schottel Hydro will manufacture and deliver the variable pitch hub for the AR1500 turbine for the Phase 1A of the MeyGen tidal energy project.

The 1.5 MW AR1500 tidal turbine is being designed and delivered by Atlantis Resources and Lockheed Martin .

Schottel Hydro will provide a hub with a housing diameter of 2.4 m and weight of 35 tonnes.

It will accommodate the turbine’s rotor with a diameter of approximately 18 m, Schottel Hydro’s press release reads.

Jens-Henning Bernstein , Project Manager at Schottel Hydro, said: “Taking part in this project is a great honor for us and our work. For this project we especially build on the success of the turbine shaft, hub and pitch mechanism including hydraulics and controls we provided to the first Hammerfest HS1000 turbine in 2011.”

The hub will be delivered in early 2016, and the installation of the AR1500 turbine will take place later that year, according to Schottel Hydro.

Situated in the Pentland Firth, the MeyGen tidal array will consist of 269 submerged tidal turbines, with 398 MW capacity, enough to power 175.000 Scottish homes.

In Phase 1A of the project, four submerged turbines generating 6 MW will be installed off Caithness, with the first power expected to be delivered in 2016.

Schottel Hydro, a German-based company, offers services in three segments: hydrokinetic turbines, semi-submerged platforms, and components such as turbine hubs and drives.
