A third phase of a major coastal protection scheme from Holland to Clacton is being lined-up with a funding boost of £3 million.

The cash is coming from Anglian Water (AW) and will go towards the seafront project.

The scheme, announced today by Nick Turner, Tendring District Council’s (TDC) Cabinet Member for Coastal Protection, is hoped to get underway in 2016/17.

The further initiative is being developed while work on the first two phases of the £36million project has been carried out over a 5km stretch from Holland Haven to Clacton Pier.

A study has been carried out following recent instability and wet weather winter conditions in the Clacton and Holland Cliffs. Along with future events, it could have an impact on the scheme which protects the toe of the slope from coastal erosion.

The phase two of the project, which is funded by TDC, Essex County Council and the Environment Agency, is due for completion in the autumn.

Work on the rock groynes is now complete and the beach recharge is well underway.

Three new beaches, those closest to Clacton and up to Vista Road, were reopened last week and will remain so for the rest of the summer.

The first phase involved seven new beaches at Holland which were open earlier this year.

The new coastal defenses will protect more than 3,000 residential and commercial properties for the next 100 years and will act as a catalyst for the renaissance of the seafront.
