Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović said that the country’s key energy project is still the liquefied natural gas terminal on the Island of Krk, but a floating LNG facility is an option.
Speaking at the Central and South Eastern Europe Gas Connectivity Conference the President said that the energy security is the main challenge of the region, adding that, besides the LNG terminal, the Adriatic-Ionic gas pipeline and oil and gas exploration in the region could have multiple positive effects across the region and, more broadly, across Central and South Eastern Europe.
Speaking with the local media Grabar-Kitarović said that Croatia can learn a lot from the Baltic countries. She recently met with the Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė who supported the LNG terminal in Croatia. She shared Lithuania’s experience in building an import LNG terminal with her Croatian counterpart.
When asked about the possibility of a floating LNG terminal, Grabar-Kitarović told that based on Lithuanian experience a floating LNG terminal is something Croatia could consider as it can be built a lot quicker than a land-based facility.
She added that 30% of the workforce that built the Klaipeda LNG terminal were Croatians so the country already has the know-how and revealed that there are several interested investors in such a project.
