First Nations formed the Tsimshian Environmental Stewardship Authority which will assess the environmental impact of liquefied natural gas projects proposed in the Prince Rupert region of British Columbia.
The group, formed by Metlakatla, Kitselas, Gitxaala, Kitsumkalum and Gitga’at First Nations told in an open letter that they support the concept of LNG exports from the province of British Columbia, initially focusing on Pacific NorthWest LNG project with which Metlakatla ans Kitselas First Nations have signed benefit agreements, The Globe and Mail reports.
The focus on PNW LNG comes as the project is the most advanced project in the region where the newly formed TESA has the mandate to examine projects and the cumulative environmental impact.
Lax Kw’alaams First Nation has not joined the group due to its concerns of Pacific NorthWest LNG export projects impact on the salmon habitat that is in close proximity to the project’s site on Lelu Island.
In his comment of the First Nations’ joint action, Pacific NorthWest LNG president Michael Culbert welcomed the formation of the group.
