China’s first floating LNG import terminal, the Tianjin FSRU, has not been affected by two massive explosions that took place in the northeastern Chinese city of Tianjin late Wednesday.
The explosions, which occurred at a warehouse used to store toxic chemicals and gas, were so colossal the blasts could be seen from space.
The blasts in the city of Tianjin killed at least 50 people, and 700 people were injured, according to reports.
The 145,000 cbm GDF Suez Cape Ann, which is being used as an LNG import terminal in Tianjin, is moored about 20 kilometers away from the blast site.
“ All the crew onboard are safe and well, the same goes for GDF Suez Cape Ann ,” Birgitte Hjertum, VP Strategy, Communication and Investor Relations at Höegh LNG told LNG World News in an e-mailed statement.
GDF Suez Cape Ann is owned by Höegh LNG Partners, a unit of Norway’s Höegh LNG, but it is under a 20-year charter until 2030 to France’s Engie, formerly GDF Suez.
It is serving the Tianjin project under a sub-charter between Engie and CNOOC signed in 2013.
