Alexey Miller, head of the Russian giant Gazprom held meeting with representatives of Kogas, Mitsui and Mitsubishi discussing further cooperation within the liquefied natural gas sector.
Miller met with Yorihiko Kojima, Chairman of the Board of Mitsubishi Corporation, addressing options of further cooperation in the Sakhalin II project in which Mitsubishi Corp holds a 10% stake.
Mitsui of Japan is also interested in deepening the cooperation with Gazprom on the Sakhalin II project. Miller discussed the matter with Masami Iijima, Chairman of the Mitsui Board of Directors. It was noted that the expansion of the Sakhalin II project opens doors for further cooperation. Currently, Mitsui holds a 12.5% stake in the project.
The possible expansion of the Sakhalin II project is seen as a gateway to expanding Russias gas exports to Asia-Pacific countries, particularly to South Korea as it was noted at a meeting between Alexey Miller and Lee Seung-hun, CEO of Kogas.
Kogas has a 1.5 mtpa of LNG supply deal with Gazprom in place since 2005 and the planned addition of a third train to the 9.7 mtpa facility could see the volume rise.
