The RFA and IMarEST launched the new maritime professional development programme at the ‘London International Shipping Week’ event yesterday.

As President of IMarEST, Martin Murphy from Tidal Energy Ltd, the company behind the DeltaStream tidal energy device, introduced the programme by saying: “Professional development for seafarers – and qualifications such as becoming Incorporated or Chartered – are becoming increasingly important in the current climate, where employers both in the maritime sector and across other industries, are looking for universally-acknowledged qualifications that demonstrate skills and expertise that are useful both at sea and ashore.

“It is therefore vital that we make it as easy as possible for our sea-going professionals to achieve these qualifications, for their own advancement and competency and also for the fortification of the sector as a whole. And I believe that our seminal new professional development programme will do just that, by providing a clear and simple route for officers and ratings to achieve registration – be it Chartered, Incorporated, Registered or Technician status.”
