Eni’s CEO Claudio Descalzi said on Thursday that natural gas found offshore Cyprus could be shipped to markets in Europe through the Damietta LNG plant in Egypt.

According to media reports, Eni’s chief said that there is an “opportunity” to process Cypriot gas at the Damietta facility in Egypt, in which the company is a shareholder, for export to Europe.

Descalzi met with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades today in Nicosia to discuss Eni’s current activities in the country and the potential for future projects.

Among the topics discussed during the meeting were the geopolitical scenarios that the recent gas discovery made off Egypt will bring throughout the area and the role that Cyprus, due to its energy potential, will play in the near future, Eni said in statement.

“ Eni believes in the significant synergies of joint development in the entire area of the eastern Mediterranean. This area could be of crucial strategic importance as a gas hub for the whole region and also makes an important contribution to European energy security ,” it added.
