The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, in partnership with The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey recently awarded a $13.8 million contract to Donjon Marine Co. Inc. to perform maintenance dredging of the Port Newark Pier Head Channel in Newark Bay, New Jersey.
The contract involves deepening the channel to approximately 40 feet and removing approximately 221,500 cubic yards of dredged material. The dredging will commence in October 2015 and expected to be completed in January 2016.
“ This contract will help ensure continued safe passage for vessels moving throughout the Newark Bay federal navigation channe l,” said Col. David Caldwell, commander, New York District. “ The Corps is excited to be able to beneficially re-use this material, which consists of a mixture of sand, silt, and clay at an upland site in Sayreville, NJ. ”
The maintenance dredging of the Port Newark Pier Head Channel will ensure the uninterrupted flow of commerce in the Port of New York and New Jersey and safe access for ships to navigate to the container terminals in Newark Bay.
The Port is the largest on the East Coast, providing over 269,900 direct and indirect jobs in port related activities and $11.2 billion in personal income.
