Morocco’s energy minister Abdelkader Amara said the country could shortlist three companies for the LNG import contracts within the next two weeks.
Amara told reporters that the country is currently assessing offers from Shell and U.S., Spanish and French companies, Reuters reports.
He added that in the first phase the country intends to start importing 2 million tons of LNG a year from 2020.
Morocco’s power utility ONEE recently launched an international tender in order to select technical advisor for the development of the country’s LNG to power project.
The country’s LNG to power project would entail the construction of the marine jetty at Jorf Lasfar, as well as the LNG import terminal, including LNG storage.
Under the planned project, Morocco intends to set up 2400 MW capacity of combined cycle power plants (CCGTs), which will be fired up by the natural gas provided by the LNG import terminal.
