Tocardo Tidal Turbines has installed an array consisting of 5 tidal turbines in the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier, the Netherlands, on September 24, 2015.
The array has the capacity of 1.2 MW, and consists of 5 Tocardo’s T2 tidal turbines.
The suspension structure, designed and build by Huisman, was specifically designed for this project in such a way that the storm barrier remains fully operational at all times.
The T2 turbines are fitted with bi-directional rotor blades because the barrier only closes when a heavy storm approaches. This enables the turbines to generate electricity during ebb and flood.
The array is expected to generate electricity for approximately 1000 Dutch households.
