Rotterdam-based dredging and marine contractor Van Oord has reached an agreement with Denmark’s DONG Energy to transport and install the 87 foundations at Walney Extension offshore wind farm in the United Kingdom.

Van Oord will transport the foundations, monopiles and transition pieces, from the various suppliers in Denmark, Germany and the United Kingdom, and then install the foundations at the offshore wind farm site. The installation work is planned to start in spring 2017.

The Walney Extension offshore wind farm is located in the Irish Sea, approximately 19 kilometers off the Walney Island in Cumbria. The wind farm will consist of 40 Vestas and 47 Siemens wind turbines with a total capacity of 660 MW. The park is expected to be operational in 2018 and is projected to generate enough electricity to power 460,000 households.

”After signing the contract for the transport and installation of the foundations for the Burbo Bank Extension offshore wind farm earlier this year, we are proud that DONG is again showing its appreciation for our approach to constructing offshore wind projects,” said Johan van Wijland, Managing Director of Van Oord Offshore Wind Projects.

”Both companies are experienced in the field and feel that cooperating on two succeeding projects will enable us to optimise our work methods even further, as well as to gain from each other’s know-how and experience and thus to contribute to the further development of offshore wind energy as reliable renewable energy source.”
