Québec-based hydrokinetic technology developer Idénergie has signed a contract with Parks Canada for the installation of 10 in-river turbines in Canadian provinces of Alberta, and British Columbia.

According to Écotech Québec, Idénergie is expected to install 10 in-river turbines in the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks located between Alberta and British Columbia starting in spring 2016.

The project is part of the rehabilitation plan for Parks Canada, under which clean energy technologies are planned to be installed on several sites.

Idénergie has developed the river turbine technology that is equipped with two Darrieus turbines. It has the maximum capacity of up to 12 kW/h daily.

The river current spins the turbines which activate the generator. The energy produced is then converted to electricity using a built-in smart converter.

Afterward, the converted energy is forwarded to the batteries by an electric cable.

The turbines are designed to be installed at river sites with a minimum depth of 60 cm, and water velocities of 1 m/s and up to 3 m/s.

Écotech Québec is a non-profit organization that aims to position Québec as a centre of excellence for clean technologies in North America.
