Following an accident at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s shipyard, the government reportedly ordered a partial halt of operations.
The South Korean government ordered the shipbuilding giant to stop construction on five vessels after one of the LPG tankers under construction caught fire on Tuesday, Yonhap reports.
The work was halted immediately and will only restart when DSME ensures full work safety on the vessel that caught fire, as well as on the four other same vessels currently under construction, according to the report.
One worker reportedly lost his life while seven others were injured when fire broke out inside a gas tanker. This was the second incident at DSME following a similar one in August when two workers were killed and seven injured.
Due to the reoccurrence of the incident, DSME is now facing aggravated punishment, the report added.
Daewoo is one of the largest shipbuilders in the world, including the LNG industry. LNG carriers accounted for 52 ships in DSME’s order book at the end of September.
