Tidal Lagoon Power, the developer behind Swansea Bay tidal lagoon, has announced job cuts following the delay in the Swansea Bay tidal lagoon construction start.
The company is reportedly making 17 redundancies at its Gloucester office.
The announcement comes after the company stated last month that it is postponing the beginning of marine works on the Swansea Bay tidal lagoon project for the spring 2017.
The construction was supposed to start in 2016 but it was rescheduled due to the delay in agreeing the subsidy with the UK government.
Tidal Lagoon Power issued a following statement regarding the job cuts: “Our short-term priority is the construction of the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon and the progression of plans at Cardiff and Newport to harness the country’s best tidal range resource in the Severn Estuary.
“Our team needs to align with these objectives and regretfully that involves some redundancies.”
“Our vision is to provide 8% of the UK’s electricity from six tidal lagoons and we have grown quickly so as to take forward these plans. However, our first project is now scheduled to start on site one year later than planned and that inevitably impacts the development of the fleet.”
In addition to Swansea Bay tidal lagoon project, Tidal Lagoon Power plans to build tidal lagoons in Cardiff Bay , and off Newport , and is also conducting early feasibility and engagement work relating to the delivery of three other full-scale UK tidal lagoons at West Cumbria, Colwyn Bay and Bridgwater Bay.
