Eastern Scheldt tidal energy project which comprises an array of 5 Tocardo’s T2 tidal turbines has officially been put into service on November 25, 2015.

This commercial demonstrator array , located in the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier, the Netherlands, has the capacity of 1.2 MW and is expected to generate power for approximately 1000 Dutch households.

Tocardo’s T2 tidal turbines used in the project are fitted with bi-directional rotor blades because the barrier only closes when a heavy storm approaches. This enables the turbines to generate electricity during ebb and flood.

The 50 m long and 20 m wide suspension structure that houses the turbines, designed and build by Huisman, was customized for this project in such a way that the storm barrier remains fully operational at all times.

The operational phase of the project is expected to last for 20 years.
